Invariant aspects in M-commerce environments
2005
Mobile phones and other small and powerful portable devices have revolutionized personal communication and affected the lifestyles of the people in the industrialized world. Following credible estimates, in a few years there will over two - billions of such portable devices in use. An emerging trend is the electronic commerce performed using mobile terminals over wireless networks, often called mobile commerce or M-commerce. Mobile commerce environments are characterized by high complexity, including myriads of technical and organizational aspects. This property makes it difficult to distinguish the more fundamental issues, structures, and concepts in mobile commerce from the hype. To captu…
Generation of TCR-engineered reference cell samples to control T-cell assay performance
2020
In vitro cellular assays analyzing antigen-specific T cells are characterized by their high complexity and require controlled conditions to lower experimental variations. Without standard cellular reagents, it is difficult to compare results over time and across institutions. To overcome this problem, a simple and robust technology was developed to generate TCR-engineered reference samples (TERS) containing defined numbers of antigen-specific T cells. Utilization of TERS enables performance control of three main T-cell assays: MHC-peptide multimer staining, IFN-gamma ELISpot and cytokine flow cytometry. TERS continuously deliver stable results and can be stored for longer periods of time. H…
Foaming in membrane bioreactors: Identification of the causes
2012
Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) represent by now a well established alternative for wastewater treatment. Their increasing development is undoubtedly related to the several advantages that such technology is able to guarantee. Nevertheless, this technology is not exempt from operational problems; among them the foaming still represents an "open challenge" of the MBR field, due to the high complexity of phenomenon. Unfortunately, very little work has been done on the foaming in MBRs and further studies are required. Actually, there is not a distinct difference between conventional activated system and MBR: the main difference is that the MBR plants can retain most Extracellular Polymeric Substan…
Visual category representations in the infant brain
2021
SUMMARYVisual categorization is a human core cognitive capacity1,2that depends on the development of visual category representations in the infant brain3–7. However, the exact nature of infant visual category representations and their relationship to the corresponding adult form remains unknown8. Our results clarify the nature of visual category representations from electroencephalography (EEG) data in 6- to 8-month-old infants and their developmental trajectory towards adult maturity in the key characteristics of temporal dynamics2,9, representational format10–12, and spectral properties13,14. Temporal dynamics change from slowly emerging, developing representations in infants to quickly e…
Development of an RNA-based kit for easy generation of TCR-engineered lymphocytes to control T-cell assay performance.
2018
Cell-based assays to monitor antigen-specific T-cell responses are characterized by their high complexity and should be conducted under controlled conditions to lower multiple possible sources of assay variation. However, the lack of standard reagents makes it difficult to directly compare results generated in one lab over time and across institutions. Therefore TCR-engineered reference samples (TERS) that contain a defined number of antigen-specific T cells and continuously deliver stable results are urgently needed. We successfully established a simple and robust TERS technology that constitutes a useful tool to overcome this issue for commonly used T-cell immuno-assays. To enable users t…
Market Polarization due to Difference in Interface Implementation Efforts
2009
Another factor potentially affecting the evolution of the OSS/BSS software market is the high complexity of software interfaces. The software provided to a customer – a CSP – needs to be integrated with a number of heterogeneous subsystems deployed by the customer. If the number of integration interfaces is high, a vast amount of special knowledge is needed in the vendor organization. High integration efforts also take up the time of the compentent employees of the vendor organization, thereby reducing the number of customers which it is capable of serving. As a result, only few large vendors can compete in such market, and, due to a lack of competition, the evolution towards a horizontaliz…
Using methods and IT tools innovatively for the management of International IS development projects
2008
Increasingly, information systems (IS) development is done internationally. International IS development is very complex. Some of the factors that lead to this high complexity include geographically dispersed teams, time-zone differences, cultural differences, language problem, and communication challenges. All these affect coordination and collaboration significantly. Therefore, the project management activities have to be executed via different methods and information technology (IT) tools. There is a significant lack of studies dealing with the management of international IS development using methods and IT tools innovatively. Therefore, this study has been undertaken to fill in this res…
